Illuminated Calligraphy

Beta - v439

1 · How the page is set

This is how the whole page is set, and what every paragraph follows until the bar above gives it a hand, a size or a ranging of its own. Lugrasimo is the scribal hand the certificates are made out in, MedievalSharp the blacker one they set the register's entries in, and IM Fell English the office's own upright face. Size is in points and leading is the line's height as a multiple of it.

2 · The page

Any sheet from 4 to 24 inches a side, the shorter side no more than 17. Give it upright; Landscape turns it.

The sheet is the paper it prints on — Statement (5½ × 8½ in), Letter (8½ × 11), Legal (8½ × 14), 11 × 17 or a Custom size of your own — set upright or turned on its side; the writing flows onto as many sheets as it needs, and the frame is laid for the sheet. The illuminated frame is the one the certificates wear, at print resolution. Turned off, the writing keeps the same measure on a plain sheet — which is what a long text wants. Colour is the gilded frame and capitals; Black & white is the same illumination in line, the border and capitals the office wears in e-reader mode, for a plainer sheet or a mono printer. The border is the certificates' own, with the four evangelists at the corners, or one of the two the office wears at its night offices: Black Hours, gold on blue, as at Compline and the Offices of the Dead, or Requiem, gold on black with a memento mori — or Travers, black strapwork with its crosses drawn into it, which Travers plain gives with none of the colour: no gold rules, no gold ring, the woodcuts in their own black rims — or Pugin's gold and blue diaper alone, with one of his painted tiles at each corner: the red rose, the crowned monogram or the fleur-de-lys, chosen corner by corner. The gold ring within the ornament comes in the two liturgical colours that art was struck in.

3 · The image

One image, laid across the head of the first sheet with the writing beneath it, the way an illuminated leaf carries its miniature. It is fitted whole into a box of the depth set here — never cropped, never stretched — and travels inside the file, so the page still prints with no network. A large photograph is scaled down to what the page can print before it is kept; an image with its ground cut away keeps it, and the paper shows through.

4 · The whole page

One sheet to a page, on the paper chosen in section 2 — load the printer with the same — with the design set a third of an inch in from the paper's edge so no printer clips the corner miniatures. Print with background graphics on, or neither the frame nor the capitals will appear. Save PDF, at the head of the page, opens the same sheets in your browser's print window — choose Save as PDF as the destination to download them.
